Digital Cozy MkIV POH
Thu, Mar 13 08 @ 10:07 AM Eastern Daylight Time

Cozy MkIV POHOne of my desires is to have the ability to edit the POH to suit an individual plane.  As people add more advance systems to their planes, the original POH is becoming out of date.

Yair inspired this idea with his POH, but his was highly modified to suit his plane.  I have taken the liberty of carefully scanning and running an OCR program on the Cozy POH.  Then I spent a great deal of time fixing the OCR mistakes and formatting it to be consistent.  I'm very happy with it.  All the graphics are simple B&W images so they're not editable.  At this point, I've intentionally made it as close to the original manual as possible.  This way it's easier to edit to what someone actually wants for their plane.

As Aircraft Spruce is the copyright holder, I asked for their permission to freely release this on the web.  The current POH they sell for $5.  Jim Irwin said he would continue to sell the printed copy, but had no issues with me releasing this file.  They've even offered to link here from their website.

With Spruce's endorsement, we can freely and legally passed this file around between builders.  Now the POH can be improved by the Cozy community.  For example, changes could be made for the use of the electric nose gear or more sophisticated electronics.  Many builders are commenting that after flight testing, that section is no longer needed in the manual.

If you make any changes and would like to share your version, I'll be more than happy to host multiple version.

A couple comments on the file:

  • Create in MS Word 2003.  Page set to 1/2 of a letter size page.
  • MS word has a BOOK FOLD option that may help you print this as a book.   I have NOT used this feature as our office has better printing capabilities.
  • The Table of Contents and all page references are linked.  They updated automatically. Right click on the gray background text and click 'Update Field'.
  • TEXT EDITABLE ONLY.  All the graphics are scanned images from the printed POH.
  • I've utilized the "Styles and Formatting" style option to help maintain consistency.

Available from My Downloads:  Digital Cozy MkIV POH (1.5 Meg)

Enjoy....

P.S.  Before anyone suggests that I took time away from building to work on this file, I'll nip it in the bud.  I travel frequently for work and spend many nights away from home where I'm not able to work on the Cozy.  This has given me the time to work on this.  Because of the sporadic work, it's taken over 6 months to finalize this version.

Printing as a Book
Fri, Mar 14 08 @ 08:18 AM Eastern Daylight Time

Cozy MkIV POHI've had inquires on how to print this as a book.  Here are my suggestions.   It will be printed similar to the original POH with 4 pages per sheet (2 pages per side).

In MS Word

  1. File, Page Setup, Margins Tab. Notice the Margin Settings (.75 L/R & .5 T/B)
  2. On the Paper Tab, Select your paper size. Most likely Letter.
  3. Select the Margins Tab again. Under Multiple Pages change from 'Normal' to 'Bookfold'.
  4. Selecting 'Book fold' changes the orientation from 'Portrait' to 'Landscape' and also changes the margin settings.  Change the margins back to the original settings. (.75 L/R & .5 T/B)   (The 'Sheets per booklet' can be set to your preference. I prefer 'All')
That's all you need to change.  Now to print.
MS Word will be expecting to print on the front and back of EVER PAGE.  There are two basic methods.

Hand Feed
  1. Remove all the paper from your printer or selected manual feed when you print.
  2. Print the entire document.
  3. Put one sheet of paper in the printer.
  4. After it prints, FLIP this one page over and put it in the printer again to print the backside. Hopefully your printer automatically recognizes when paper is loaded.
  5. Load another blank sheet.
  6. continue steps 3, 4, & 5 until the document is printed.
  7. Depending on you printer, you may need to reverse the pages to be sequential before stapling.

Manual Duplex
MS Word has a Manual Duplex option in the print dialog.  This options prints all of one side, prompts you to reload the pages and then print the backside. Some print drivers will allow you to print Odd pages and then Even pages.  They'll both get the job done.

The trick to using this option is to make sure the pages are sorted correctly for the second printing.  Otherwise the pages will not be sequential.  For me I need the pages to come out of the printer in reverse order to be able to print properly on the back side.  Some of this is trial and error.

If after you've printed your first book and the pages are not in sequential order, then try the following.  Perform the exact same steps again, but this time after printing the first half, re-sort the pages.  So if you have pages sorted 1 to 10, then re-sort them to 10 to 1 and try again.  It worked for me.  Good luck.

In reality I take the easy route.  Our office just leased a brand new color laser printer.  My guess is that it's between $20-30 grand.  It scans, prints, faxes(two lines), folds, collates, staples, hole punches.  I print this document and it comes out folded and stapled!
