You can actually build an airplane?
You betcha. They are called experimental airplanes. It's one of the fastest growing segment in aviation today. You can build everything from single seat puddle jumpers to turboprops. The biggest thing to remember is if you want to fly; buy an airplane. If you want to build; go for it.
Why the Cozy Mark IV?
If I was going to build an airplane, I didn't want to borrow the money for a kitplane. I simply couldn't justify spending $20k to $30k for something that would not fly for years. I originally liked the Velocity for several reasons, but it would take some time to save money just for the kit. The Cozy is a plans built airplane, basically it's scratch built. You buy the plans and build everything else without needing to buy from one supplier. For this reason the initial investment can be anywhere between $200 and $15,000. I like that. After more research, I now believe the cozy fits us better than the Velocity for this and many other reason.
Your wife bought you the plans?
Yes, talk about the ultimate endorsement. She bough them for our first anniversary gift. Here's the story:
After finally making the decision that the Cozy was the plane that I wanted to build, I visited Nat at Oshkosh 2003. After much drooling, staring, and pondering at his and other's planes, I called my wife. I'd been telling her for months that this was probably the one. Well, I called and said that this was it. The Cozy makes the most sense of the homebuilts. I bought the information packet from Nat. Little did I know that my wife ordered the plans the very next day to give me as an anniversary gift soon after Osh. :)
Why is my website named Cozy Midnight?
I've always liked planes and boats that had names. Brian Deford named his plane Blond Streak after his 3 girls and the fact that his plane streaks across the sky. Anyways, I own plans number 1200. I though it would be cool to use that in the plane's name somehow. Keeping 1200 in mind, I thought about something like High Noon for 12:00pm, but settled on Cozy Midnight. To answer your next question. No it will not be painted black. In fact, I'll probably name the plane something altogether different.
